Fishing

Evening Fishing - Juha and Heidi took Rick and Kelsey fishing Sunday evening.  They said they would return around 9ish.
I think it was quite fun.  Kelsey was rather animated about the experience and shared that one of the perch they had caught waved to them as they pulled it out of the water.
I am so glad that Kelsey had this opportunity to Fish in a magical land called Finland .

we fixed them for dinner the next day.  Where the Perch was tasty - the Common Bream was really boney and not a wonderful eating experience.

Vehoniemi Tower

After wandering about the parked cars in the Vehoniemi Automobile Museum we walked just a little way up the road to the stairs that led to the Tower.  From the tower you can look out on to the Vehoniemi Lake.  To me the view was spectacular.

Vehoniemi car museum

A 15 or 20 minute drive took us to the Vehoniemi Car Museum.  This was a free tour.   All of the cars are owned by individuals - and are driven from time to time.  My favorite was the Ford with the round windshield.  It even sported a umbrella basket!
After touring we stopped and had a little something in the coffee and cake inn - which I believe is how this little museum supports itself.  There they serve a little item called a spoon monk - which is like a doughnut.   The recipe dates from the 1920's, and is not shared with the public.  I guess if I want to create my own - I shall have to purchase several, and have them analyzed in the lab -- (ha ha ha!)

Saturday -- at the flea market

Twice a year Kangasala has a Fleamarket.  This year it was on Friday and Saturday July 12th and 13th.  Heidi, Julia, Kelsey, Rick and I went on Saturday.  It was pretty interesting.  Satu tells me that generally people here don't have garage or yard sales - or even estate sales --

It was great fun and I found some really fun items - which I get to bring home!

I thought this was cute -- and look there is a dutch door along with a Continental kit!

It was really a lovely day -- saw more puppies and looked at statues in the park - further on there were some rather fun looking birds in cages -- here are but two of the ones we thought were the most fun

I think I have a New Love -- Moomin's - I wasn't suppose to take pictures - so I snuck a few -- I really wanted to take pictures of the Diorama's but there were always Museum people around - so I got a couple of pictures of pictures.  I am now reading the books in English.  it is a series of 8 books telling stories of Moomin Mama and Moomin Papa -- :) how fun - I don't think I will ever grow up. These are charming stories by Tove Jansson - and it is much like the Hello Kitty rage.  Lots of products showing the moomin characters.  I have already begun a collection of Moomin mugs --

Moominvalley (Swedish: Mumindalen, Finnish: Muumilaakso) is a fictional place, where the Moomins live in the tales by Finnish author Tove Jansson.

Tampere - first encounter :) Thursday

Our original quest today was to go to the bank and obtain Euro's -- which we did without a hitch.  Rick was a tad bit disappointed in the way Bank of America treated him before we left -- They had informed him that to have the best experience in Europe he should have a credit card with a chip in it - and I get that - my CITI Bank card was most helpful.  Bank of America said that the card with the chip would take about 2 weeks to arrive, but when Rick mentioned to them that we would be leaving in a few days the customer service agent said that they would fedEx it to him for a charge of $25 -- CITI bank on the other hand - FedEx'd to me at no charge -- go figure.

So we do our purchases in Cash Euro or Rick has his passport handy with the regular magnetic strip on his card.
I am thinking that a card will be canceled when we return home -- its a shame that the big banks no longer value customer service.

Meanwhile -- back to the original quest -- we got our Euro's, and we were going to go to the Moomin Museum - to see the Moomin's -- it is a great book series.  I have purchased book 1 and plan to purchase the est of the series once we come home to Portland.  However - we never made it to the Museum - we got distracted - with a park, and a department store -- lol.  Tomorrow we shall go to the Museum -- and I understand there is also a GeoCache event at noon tomorrow also -- noon to 1 - then we shall go to the Museum - and shop some more :)

Kangasalan Lepokoti

In 1910–1986, the Kangasala Rest Home was a boarding house that became well-known as a place where many famous Finnish artists spent their holidays and worked. Now restored, the rest home displays its diverse and original objects, accompanied with interesting stories.

The rest home is not only a tourist destination; its premises are also hired out for functions and conferences. The sauna building has a spacious sauna, a room with a fireplace, and a kitchen.

I thought this would be a grand place to visit.  Pretty much cause it was quaint looking and it also had a shop full of local artist offerings.  I was a bit disappointed when it said on a sign that a tour of the house was available upon reservation, but Satu mentioned that we were from the States and the caretakers were more than happy to show us around.  yay!

I really did not get a grasp of what our guide was sharing with us about some of the residents that had stayed there - but had a wonderful experience just looking at all the memorabilia and feeling the energy of the house.

We stayed pretty much at home - did not go to town, just relaxed.  Kelsey was pretty tired from the travel the days before.  Rick and I slept till noonish
and Kelsey slept till 4 in the afternoon.  We watched a movie, and Satu fixed what she said was a traditional Finnish dish consisting of Pasta and ground beef, milk and eggs.  It was tasty :)

Later in the evening, I would say about 8:30 or 9:00 we went to Sauna.  That was a wonderful experience.  Even tho it took me time to actually get into the lake.  We all know what a sauna is, according to the American version.  I think that the Finnish Sauna is more like the native American version.  I don't know.  It is a small building with a water tank attached to a small stove.  There you burn wood, I dont think it is any special kind.  There are rocks in a type of well (you might describe it as such) sitting on top of the stove.  Now because the stove is in the small building with wood benches - it gets pretty warm in there -- oh yes it does!  So you dip into the water that you are heating in the water tank, and pour the water onto the hot rocks -- guess what... that creates steam, which makes it hotter!  when you get really warm - you go outside and jump into the lake!  What fun was that - although it took me much time and coxing from Satu and Heidi to get into the lake - it was rather cold.  But I finally did it a few times and it was rather refreshing.  I saw the sun begin to set below the hills, it was quite beautiful as it reflected on the lake.  I hope to take a picture or two on another day to share.  If not, well I have the image in my mind, and it is quite lovely.

Going to bed at 1 am seems to be a normal time here - as it does not get dark, at least not as I know it living in Portland Oregon.

Satu took us into the town of Kangasala so that we could purchase a sim card for our phones.  did purchase one that would fit into Kelsey's phone, but because Rick and I both have an Iphone 5 - that takes a nano chip which cannot be purchased as a sim card.  We should have arraigned to have service with AT&T before we left - international service.  But it is all good - I have Satu to take us places, and do not intend to wander without her since no one here really has a handle on the language.  So it is best to not go anywhere without a guide I would think.

We visited a small museum that showed many things of the countryside and a bit of the culture.  It was a wonderful guide there who shared with us the best she could - and Satu interpreted as well.  The museum was a building that had been used as a grain storage in the past - I would venture to say a couple of hundred of years before.  later it was transformed to be a museum.

Rick wanted to collect a cach while we were in Kangasala - so we did - and part of that Cach was a Bloodstone.  Which was mounted upon the Church of Kangasala -- of course since there was also a tour of the Church we explored.  What I find very interesting, being Wiccan - is that all the symbols that are in the church also pertain to me as well.  Religions really are not all that different.  Christianity, Pagan, Mormon  Buddhist  Muslim  Wicca  etc. - we all seem to acknowledge the same entity - we all pretty much call this entity God.  Many of the symbols in the church are the same that we use and hold sacred.  Someday - I hope that everyone will be on the same page, and agree that God and spiritually comes from within, and we are the change that needs to come about to make our world a better place.

Church of Kangasala

the blood stone on the church - it was said that an innocent was beheaded for being a witch - as they were about to strike her she said that the stone would always bleed because she was innocent.
